About Artist

Artist statement

Nightbird is an early-career ceramic artist living in Seattle. They create large-scale coil vessels meant to evoke emotion in the viewer. They are inspired by the natural processes of repetition, propagation, and variance. These natural processes manifest in both the form and surface finishing of the vessels they create.

Vessel construction

Unless otherwise noted, vessels are coil- and pinch-construction. Nightbird builds pots layer by layer, allowing the pieces to unfold with playfulness and joy. For more information, please see About the Process.

Work and teaching influences

Nightbird’s past lives included serving as a school teacher and a mental health counselor. They began pottery as an antidote for burnout; this antidote quickly outgrew its narrow lane and changed the trajectory of their life. Their background in education and mental health continues to inform their work. They value a warm, clear, and mindful teaching style, and believe in the delight of clay work.

Commissions

The artist is currently not accepting commissions, in order to prioritize relationship with clay and self. However, existing vessels can be viewed in their Portfolio. Vessels for sale include price in the description.
